It’s not uncommon to see vehicles engulfed in flames on our daily commutes, a stark reminder of how quickly these situations can occur. While it may feel like something that only happens to others, a vehicle fire could happen to any of us. With this in mind, we thought it prudent to revisit the essential steps to take if you ever find yourself in this critical situation.
In the event of a vehicle fire, every second counts. Follow these steps to ensure your safety:
First, if possible, drive the vehicle to the side of the road, away from other traffic.
Before Getting Out
- Stay calm and do not panic.
- Turn off the engine if it’s safe to do so, to reduce fuel supply.
- Engage the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving.
Getting Out Safely
- Exit the vehicle as quickly and as calmly as possible.
- Use the door handle but don’t touch any metal parts, as they may be electrified, depending on the cause of the fire.
- Stay low. Crouch low to the ground while exiting to prevent inhaling toxic fumes.
- Move at least 10-15 metres away from the vehicle. When you’re dealing with a vehicle transporting flammable materials, increase this distance to 300 metres.
Once You’re Out
- Call the fire department or emergency services and report the incident. Provide the correct location.
- Do not attempt to fight the fire unless you’re trained to do so, it’s best to let the professionals handle it.
- Do not approach the vehicle to retrieve belongings: Vehicle fires can escalate rapidly and sudden flare-ups or explosions can cause serious or fatal injuries.
- Stay upwind to avoid toxic fumes.
Also…
- Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for other potential hazards, such as exploding tyres or falling debris.
- Do not approach the vehicle until the fire department declares it safe to do so.
- Follow instructions from emergency responders. They’ll guide you through the next steps.
Remember: Your safety should be your top priority. GET OUT and STAY OUT. Let the professionals handle the situation.
