She is imprinted on the house and on its (housekeeper, the silent and sinister Mrs Danvers, whose passionate obsession with her former employer is echoed in Carol Ann Duffy’s poem, Warming Her Pearls (1987). But when she makes her grand entrance, her husband angrily orders her to change.

Together, these constitute a series of gothic hauntings that draw attention not only to the psychological trauma inherent in those earlier works, but the way in which that trauma and its terrors are profoundly gendered. I’m not sure what will make this version “killer.” But I will say that I think Dame Kristin Scott Thomas will have the hardest job. In both Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel Du Maurier is of course brilliant at exposing the damage that can be done by such narrow-minded and stereotypical views of women. Hitchcock’s film, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, remains the standout version, but the plot had to be tweaked to adhere to Hollywood’s rigid Hays Code of moral conduct, which [***SPOILER ALERT***] didn’t allow a murderer to get away with it. This follows recent adaptations of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House (2018) and its second season, The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), a reworking of Henry James’ The Turn of The Screw (1898). In my own rereading of the novel, it strikes me that the second Mrs de Winter has far more power than she has been given credit for. He swiftly rescues her from drudgery, proposes marriage, and takes her back to England to live in his beautiful and ancient estate, Manderley. Retrospection taints the novel with a pervasive sense of inevitable doom and a desperate sympathy for the naïve young narrator. Female gothic narratives seek to expose the psychological manipulations and abuse of power disguised as romance. This month sees the release of the Netflix film starring Lily James as the second Mrs de Winter and Armie Hammer (the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network) as Maxim. Rebecca’s psychological suspense drew Hitchcock’s attention, and he swiftly adapted it as a film, released in 1940 starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Neither the 1959 film nor the 2012 ITV mini series do justice to the complexities of the book, but the latter, starring Matthew Rhys with Eileen Atkins and Fleabag’s ‘sexy priest’ Andrew Scott, is entertaining. What became one of Hitchcock’s most iconic movies started life as a short story by du Maurier set in her beloved Cornwall. Rebecca had worn an identical costume the year before. Welcome to Tatler. In “My Cousin Rachel”, the reader was left unsure of Rachel’s true personality, but there is no doubt about Rebecca. ‘Everything is kept just as Mrs de Winter liked it. It’s hard to follow a classic.

With her penetrating stare, hypnotic voice, and ability to suddenly appear and disappear in shot, Anderson has been seen as the quintessential ‘Danny’, caressing Rebecca’s delicate nightgown and enticing the second Mrs de Winter to fall under her spell and fall effortlessly from the bedroom window. In the novel, the opening dream sequence tells us that Manderley is a ‘sepulchre’, a ‘desolate shell’, but the ending of the novel is deliciously ambiguous. Whereas Jane’s ultimate devotion to her husband is celebrated in that novel, Du Maurier encourages her reader to recognise her narrator’s powerlessness, Read more: In Hitchcock’s adaptation, Olivier’s British stiff upper lip and standoffishness counteracted this sense of threat and due to the strictures of the Motion Picture Production Code, Maxim was only allowed to accidentally kill Rebecca by pushing her and causing her to hit her head on a piece of ship’s tackle (the hero couldn’t get away with murder in 1940s cinema!).
